Substitute Day: Recycling Bin Assignment

1) Howtomakestuff.com
~ http://howtomakestuff.com/2008/03/11/going-green-5/

This was a helpful article, recycling can be a much better substitute over throwing things on the ground or on the earth. Recycling can also preserve materials and allow for them to be used again. It's much better than just throwing away something that is re-usable. This also wasn't too hard of a guide to follow, as nearly anyone can do it. I also do agree with putting more emphasis on recycling.

2) eHow.com
~ http://www.ehow.com/how_5167944_make-crafty-recycling-bin.html

This was another good article on how to make a recycling bin. It was much more detailed however, and is a more "professional" looking recycling bin. I could see myself using this method to make a recycling bin as it doesn't involve using too much materials. It doesn't take long to do, which is a plus since it is best to save time when creating things.

3)  doityourself.com
~ http://www.doityourself.com/stry/make-your-own-recycling-bin

This article was short and simple when explaining how to create a recycling bin. It doesn't involve using many materials or supplies to make the recycling bin. All it requires you is to find a storage container and then label it according to how a recycling bin would be. This isn't as in depth as other articles, but it does get the job done. It also makes the task very simple.

4) marthastewart.com
~ http://www.marthastewart.com/article/newspaper-recycling-bin

I found this one as easy the guide by doityourself.com. It is very simple and inexpensive to do. Finding a wooden crate is also cheap and can be actually be obtained for free. However, the only drawback I find to the recycling bin in this article is that it is mainly for newspapers. It would be best to have an all purpose recycling bin so you're not limited on what you can put in it. This does save a lot of paper though.

5) associatedcontent.com
~ http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1351113/how_to_make_a_wooden_recycling_bin.html

Making a wooden recycling bin does take much more time than making one by different materials. It involves much time cutting and combining pieces when you easily use a different material, (such as plastic) to make one. However, making a wooden recycle bin would be sturdy. It would also be strong enough to support anything put inside of it.

Roller Coaster Ride

Posted by Decorea / Category:

For this activity, I created two designs that both worked from beginning to end. The ball was even able to make it through both loops on the first design. I created the double hills at the beginning to gain a good amount of speed.

Roller Coaster Design

Posted by Decorea / Category:

For this activity I had to design a roller coaster that would be safe and fun according to the choices available. It took many tries, but I got it after thinking through on how it could work.

Roller Coaster: Kinetic and Potential Energy Videos

TLC Roller Coaster Video

At the start of a roller coaster, potential energy builds up, gravity then takes over. After this happens, kinetic energy sets off during the ride. I also noticed that there is much more speed gained after coming down from a loop or from a downward ramp. The gravitational force also got lower as the ride went higher.

Discovery Education Video

All roller coasters use physics to work. The starting point uses a mechanism to pull up the cart, and the rest of the roller coaster uses kinetic energy to move to the cart throughout. Most roller coasters do not even use engines or motors to move the coaster at all.

TLC How Roller Coasters Work

As shown at the beginning of the flash video, the coaster has the most potential energy at the first hill. This gives it a lot of energy to move downwards at a fast speed. At the next point, the energy is used and kinetic energy is increased, as the coaster is in motion. At the next hill, it again builds potential energy, then a shift between potential energy and kinetic energy continues throughout the end of the roller coaster.

Roller Coaster Simulation

For level one, it was actually simple, but it did take some time to figure out the correct points. I made the first point go downwards to give the car more speed, because as it goes down further, it'll have more speed when coming up. The speed that it gained from the first slope, allowed it to move past the first hill and reach the end. The slope was made just low enough so it wouldn't hurt the passenger.

On level two, it was pretty much the same as level one, except this time there was an extra point. This time, I used two downward slopes to gain speed when it was decreased by going upwards. This allowed the car to pass through every point. At the end, I added more of a straight edge so that the car could wouldn't stop from going to far up or have an accident by going downwards.

Level 3 took me a couple of runs to adjust the roller coaster. Many times I would run into a point where I would have good momentum and speed, but the passenger would be injured in the process. I had to make the gaps just low enough to get speed and make sure the passenger would be safe from harm.

Finally, level 4 was not too much of a hassle to finish. It wasn't as hard as the previous levels, as it was much easier to build speed with the longer length of the roller coaster. I simply used a few gaps and started with a downward slide at the beginning to gain a good amount of speed to finish. It was also easy to keep the passenger safe.

Is There an Engineer Inside of Me?

Posted by Decorea / Category:

~ I'd say there is, even before High School and Middle School, I've really been interested in technology. I've wanted to build & create new things for people. One of the main things I want to do is to be an Architect, which will require knowledge of Engineering.

~ I also have an interest in automobiles, not just the look of course, but how the vehicle is designed and the work that goes into it. All of the things under the hood that power it.

Lesson 5: Engineering Websites

The first video I watched was a 2,000 year old computer recreation.

http://www.engineering.com/Videos/VideoPlayer/tabid/4627/VideoId/2160/2000-Year-Old-Computer-Recreated.aspx
It is an ancient computer that was recreated and London, it has to be cranked by hand at every moment for it to work. It also has ancient symbols on parts of it that are believed to be Greek.

The second video was about TCL's 3D TV without glasses.

http://www.engineering.com/Videos/VideoPlayer/tabid/4627/VideoId/2124/TCLs-3D-TV-Without-The-Glasses.aspx
The TV is actually created with the same material used to get the 3D effect with 3D glasses, it is built into the TV. This allows for no need of glasses. The 3D experience will also be able to be seen from almost any angle.

Lastly, the third video is about the new Volkswagen L1 Concept Car.

http://www.engineering.com/Videos/VideoPlayer/tabid/4627/VideoId/2109/New-Volkswagen-L1-Concept-Car.aspx
It is claimed to be the most efficient car to ever be created, and can go 170 miles per gallon. It is slated for release around 2013.

Lesson 7: Bureau of Labor and Statistics

Posted by Decorea / Category:

At the Bureau of Labor and Statistics: http://www.bls.gov/k12/ it provided some good insight and information on possible jobs that we may seek.

It was helpful and showed me extra things to know about Architecture.

Lesson 6: O*NET Engineering Results

Posted by Decorea / Category:

After searching for Roller Coaster Engineering, my result was Mechanical Engineering as a top choice. Which is right, because that's one of my chosen fields.

I also searched for Architecture and my top choice was Architect, Except Landscape and Naval. Although I would like to do landscape architecture as well.

Lesson 6: eGFI Magazine

Posted by Decorea / Category:

The articles that I read were: A Bright Future and High Ambitions

The most interesting one was High Ambitions as it showed a project that has never been attempted before and would seem to be near impossible. But, it showed that there are many things to be done in Architecture that have not been done yet.

Lesson 5: Survey Results II.

Posted by Decorea / Category:

Survey Results II

~ In short, the results of all surveys are pretty close to what I'm looking for. Although some aren't what I'm interested in, for the most part the others relate to what I want to do. And the way that they describe what I do or how I act is pretty close.

Lesson 5: Survey Results

Posted by Decorea / Category:

Career Cluster Survey

~ Well being a teacher isn't my thing, but besides that it could be right. Architecture is still my main field though.

Basic Skills Survey

~ Expected it to be a little higher. @_@

Work Values Sorter

~ Eh, close enough, not exact, but it is just about right.

Lesson 4: Engineering Careers I'm Interested In

Posted by Decorea / Category:

1. Mechanical Engineer
2. Architect
3. Drafter

I chose these as for one I like cars, new school and old school. And I would like to build/draft houses and structures for other people

Blog: Lamborghini Reventon

Posted by Decorea / Category:

Lamborghini Reventon is the newest and fastest exotic produced from Lamborghini to date. It has been shown to be able to move as fast as a Jet.

Now I bet you're wondering the price eh? In the U.S. it will cost you $1.25 million dollars, but I guess that's nothing for the rich students at TCHS, right?
